Insights from Thailand: A Collective Perspective on Inside No. 9's Sardines

Following a viewing of Inside No. 9's Sardines by around 70 Thai students, they all wrote short reviews. These then formed the basis of group reviews submitted to ChatGPT with the instructions to synthesise, only use content contained in the reviews and to maintain as much of the original review language as possible. The result was the following.

The Inside No. 9 episode "Sardines" is a memorable blend of dark humour, tension, and unsettling twists that makes for a unique viewing experience. The episode centres on a game of sardines, in which characters must hide in a small, cramped space—a wardrobe—at an engagement party. This confined setting not only builds suspense but also brings hidden tensions to the surface as each new character is introduced. This intriguing premise allows for a mix of awkwardness and humour, with the close surroundings sparking both comedic exchanges and an increasingly oppressive atmosphere.

The show's dark comedy and clever writing are among its greatest strengths. With a blend of sharp wit and physical comedy, the characters' discomfort becomes a source of humour, especially as they attempt to navigate past relationships and complicated histories. The dialogue is clever, creating a darkly funny tone that gradually shifts as the story progresses. The writers play with viewers' expectations, moving from lighthearted to deeply unsettling in a way that keeps audiences guessing.

However, some audiences may find the large cast and the numerous character connections difficult to follow. The dialogue gains pace at times and with intricate relationships and characters quickly entering and exiting the wardrobe, non-native English speakers may find the play challenging at times. Additionally, some may find the single-location setting rather claustrophobic, as the cramped wardrobe amplifies the tension and adds to the feeling of discomfort for viewers as well as the characters. Ironically, the writers would probably be very happy to hear this!

Despite these possible challenges, Sardines delivers a powerful emotional rollercoaster, effectively weaving humour with suspense and culminating in a shocking twist that redefines the episode. The ending, in which a figure from the past returns in a chilling manner, leaves viewers in stunned silence, as what seemed like a lighthearted game takes on a far darker meaning. This unsettling finale exemplifies the show’s tendency to surprise and subvert, much like The Twilight Zone or Tales of the Unexpected, challenging the norms of traditional sitcoms with a darkly comedic touch.

While some may find the plot development somewhat limited, as it primarily relies on the simple sardines game and character interactions, Sardines ultimately succeeds in creating a distinctive and memorable atmosphere. The episode manages to encapsulate a full story within a brief time frame. For viewers who appreciate a blend of comedy, horror, and unpredictable storytelling, Sardines offers an inventive take on classic family tensions, leaving audiences both intrigued and unsettled.

Overall, Inside No. 9's "Sardines" is a well-crafted piece of dark comedy; a masterclass in confined storytelling, clever writing, and emotional tension. For fans of shows that push boundaries and experiment with familiar scenarios, Sardines provides a compelling experience that can only whet the appetite for what is to come in the episodes and series that follow.
